BEIJING — When you think of a waste treatment facility, your first association is likely one of bleakness, landfills, unbearable odors, and noise. However, just 100 kilometers south of the Chinese capital, Beijing—in the new eco-district of Xiongan—engineers and urban planners have demonstrated that waste management can look entirely different. They have created a pioneering model: a massive solid waste treatment plant located entirely underground, topped by a beautiful ecological park.
A green oasis above, cutting-edge technology below
On the surface, this complex resembles a modern urban park spanning 33 hectares, with an impressive 70% of the area covered in greenery. Instead of traditional industrial smokestacks belching smoke, the facility’s central stack is designed as an architectural marvel with a dual purpose: it also serves as an observation tower, offering visitors panoramic views of the park.
The question visitors ask most often is: “How is it possible that there is absolutely no smell?” The secret lies in the use of advanced negative-pressure technology. This system prevents air from escaping the containment area, effectively neutralizing and isolating any unpleasant odors within the underground chambers.
Energy for 200,000 Households
This is not merely a place where waste “disappears”; it is a highly productive green energy plant. By incinerating waste at temperatures exceeding 900°C, the facility generates approximately 200 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green electricity annually—enough to fully supply 200,000 households with clean power.
An Integrated “Zero Waste” System
Unlike conventional plants that focus on a single type of waste, the underground facility in Xiong’an processes five different types of solid waste within an integrated cycle:
Heat released during the processes is captured and reused within the system.
Biogas derived from organic waste is fed directly into the energy production grid.
Waste oils and fats are processed into eco-friendly biodiesel.
Ash and residual solid materials remaining after incineration are recycled into high-quality raw materials for road construction.
